In reply to: Week 1: Introduce Yourself and Share a Key Take away from the Training
January 25, 2024 at 12:55 pm #3333I’m Jessica Brauer (She/Her), Certified Rehabilitation counselor & Employment Specialist w/ERI. I too found sharing my own pronouns to be the take away of the training to convey I’m an ally. I do ask my clients upon meeting them their preferences in terms of name & pronouns but this next step would further clarify things for my own clients. Always enjoy the trainings with DJ.

November 8, 2023 at 3:00 pm #3196As a direct service provider, I try to find trainings/presentations that further improve my skills or expand my knowledge of resources available to us. Utilizing continuing education to further my understanding of the equity & racial justice in mental health is the first step I am taking. Allowing space for clients to share their stories and what is important to them without placing assumptions of what their goals are. My limited knowledge (currently) into the history & treatment of individuals who are not “white” and how that impacts individuals to this day has changed how I approach direct services. I plan to continue to read/research on the subject throughout my career.

November 8, 2023 at 2:54 pm #3195I have found myself going back to Dr. Coleman’s webpage & socials for the gentle reminders to not only be kind to ourselves but able to be present for our clients.
In reply to: Week 3: Ask the Presenter a Follow-up Question
November 8, 2023 at 2:53 pm #3194Beyond our community of practice, what is the best way to keep this conversation at the forefront? I think keeping conversations like this out in the open for all providers would continue to improve the services our society receives.

November 8, 2023 at 2:50 pm #3193Being mindful of my own understanding of others’ trauma will allow me to be a better provider. Having the awareness of the long-lasting implications of trauma is the first step in assisting our clients achieve their own goals. I am in the the same mindset as many others in this CoP, in that too much digital content is triggering to my own well-being/mental health. Which in turn makes it hard to provide the therapeutic services my clients come to me for.

November 8, 2023 at 2:47 pm #3192My name is Jessica Brauer and I work at ERI as an employment specialist for Dane County. I am a bit late to the conversation but still wanted to follow up on this questions. Dr. Coleman’s entire presentation had me wanting more. Learning about the healing ways we can implement our services for our clients is eye opening. Access to mental health services for all individuals would create greater healing for us as a society.

November 8, 2023 at 2:42 pm #3191In a previous role, I had a client who utilized sign language and their mother was the interpreter. I know understand how that makes services so much harder after Lisa provided her personal experiences. My client at the time would only communicate via text or email and ultimately decided to stop participating in services. I now know going forward how crucial it will be to use interpretation services.

November 8, 2023 at 2:40 pm #3190I’m an employment specialist for Dane County and provide direct services for employment/education related goals. Communication is so huge for every aspect of my work with clients. Hearing the experiences of Lisa was so eye opening in how far we have yet to go in making communication accessible for all individuals. I have yet to work with an individual from the deaf community but feel I would be better prepared on which resources to reach out to in insuring proper communication for them.

October 6, 2023 at 9:25 am #3054My name is Jessica and I work at Employment Resources, Inc (ERI) in the Dane County CCS Program as an Employment/Education Specialist. My clients have a broad range of mental/physical health diagnosis as well as additional socioeconomic barriers. Our speaker had such great takeaway messages in recognizing biases. As someone working directly with clients it can sometimes be different to see people encounter barriers beyond their control. Being able to assist people in the “real world” with their career goals helps my clients to overcome barriers and obstacles they may otherwise may not have. Its so great seeing peoples small and big wins while working with them.
