In reply to: Week 1: Introduce Yourself and Share a Key Take away from the Training
March 8, 2024 at 3:53 pm #3441Hello Everyone. I am Mary Elliston. I am an Employment Specialist with ERI. The big Take Away for me from this webinar was how to make a plan for self care and ease it into an already busy day. I felt like this is possible to do now. I am looking forward to trying this.

January 31, 2024 at 11:39 pm #3356Hi Everyone,
I am Mary Elliston. I am an Employment Specialist with ERI in Manitowoc and Sheboygan Counties. I liked how DJ made me feel very comfortable while adding to my learning. I must confess I am really bad at remembering names. I will remember someone’s life story and forget their name. I am worried that I will forget pronoun choices when names are already a concern. I make a concentrated effort but always worry that I will accidently offend someone. DJ really helped ease my comfort level on this. Of course if I am feeling comfortable the odds are much better that I will remember it all. I am living in the Grandma zone of life and if all else fails I use that excuse and make cookies. : )

November 20, 2023 at 2:59 pm #3233I have the app Hand Talk on my phone, for just in case. It seems like it would be useful to use. I would love to hear feedback from someone with hearing loss. I have used baby sign language apps to use with my people that have had a stroke or are non verbal. So far a mixture of responses. I was searching for an app that would be employer friendly or easy to use and also be able to communicate decently with the deaf or non verbal person. I am wondering if AI would be useful in this type of application. I hope a tech person out there somewhere is working on this.
The person I was working with was a student who was very adept at reading lips. He was also an avid texting person. When he landed the job, the employer used text as the main way to communicate with him across any distance. His phone was set to vibrate to alert him to incoming text messages.

November 20, 2023 at 2:38 pm #3232I am an Employment Specialist working in Manitowoc and Sheboygan Counties. I have worked with only one person so far with a hearing disability. Employment can be a difficult barrier to overcome even in simply getting an interview. Many smaller businesses seem to be reluctant if it will involve a perceived effort on their part or staff time. It is vital that everyone has what they need in order to be able to communicate. I am hopeful that in the near future the changes in technology will eventually take the communication barrier away.

October 18, 2023 at 11:18 pm #3140Hello Everyone,
My name is Mary Elliston and I am an Employment Specialist with Employment Resources Inc. Developing a good relationship with the people I serve is very important. The more I learn about them the better I can do my job in helping them find success in community employment. Mental health and trauma greatly impact the populations I work with. Most are in need of good mental health services and most are not accessing this for many reasons.
I really appreciated Dr. Coleman’s presentation. There were so many things that she shared that resonated with me. One thing she briefly mentioned concerned learning healing ways from our ancestors. I would like to hear more on this subject. I kept thinking afterwards about resiliency and what makes people resilient. What could we learn from our ancestors that would help build a resilient people today? While I believe access to good mental health services is very important to healing trauma, I wonder what we can learn from past generations that we could add to our current practices.
