In reply to: Week 2: Share a Strategy You’ve Used or Plan to Use
February 8, 2024 at 1:38 pm #3406Some time ago, I started adding pronouns to email signatures etc. I also have tried to be more aware and proactive about asking people I work with to share their pronouns. One strategy or thought process for me moving forward is that it doesn’t have to be about the pronoun only. Sometimes it is just ‘what do you prefer to go by’, i.e. what is the name preferred, how do you want me to address you.
It made sense to me terms of ‘nicknames’. Asking someone with the name Jonathan do you prefer Jonathan or Jon is no different than asking any individual we work with what they prefer.

Jessica – good question! This seems so important of a conversation to keep going but outside of a venue like this, it can be awkward to just randomly start talking about – time and place. I know it is important in all activities but we sometimes all get inundated with other things to discuss it feels like we often can forget to remember the deeper stuff that is just as important.

November 14, 2023 at 7:02 am #3219On Bethany Courtney Said:Sarah, which phone service do you use?
Hi Sarah – I am with Bethany, I am curious what service you have found useful. I found one app called HandTalk that sounds like it is working fairly well for an individual I am working with. I am always curious what other options there are because your right, interpreters are not easy to come by on short notice.

November 6, 2023 at 2:51 pm #3184I am the employment services manager and provide direct services for employment and benefits counseling services. I think the task ensuring appropriate communication is huge in making sure services are provided in a quality way. I really enjoyed hearing of the CLAS as well as Lisa’s experiences. I have seen the discrimination of employers ignoring a job seeker due to language accommodation requests (particularly the interpreter request) so it was interesting to hear the point that employers can use the cost of an interpreter as a business deduction. Good tidbit to know!

October 19, 2023 at 5:10 pm #3149I am going to echo some of the statements here but it really is amazing how much digital content can be damaging and play a toll on someone’s mental well being! I know I have found myself taking more and more breaks away from anything social media.
I think I am also going to try to incorporate more understanding with people I serve around realizing and being aware that the exhaustion for them is real and it is important for me to recognize and provide that support and space.

October 10, 2023 at 7:59 pm #3106Hello, I am Jolene Wanek. I work at Employment Resources as a service provider for both employment and benefit counseling services.
I was really impressed with Dr. Christina’s presentation as it brought many things to the table to start conversations. I found the brief conversation about code switching to be intriguing. This is something I had not considered much previously. And, how does code switching impact everything we do and the number of codes we switch through depending on our environment in the moment.
I was also really happy to hear how Dr. Christina approach recognition of historical trauma and the impact that plays in everything that people do.

October 10, 2023 at 11:22 am #3089Hi, my name is Jolene. I work at Employment Resources Inc (ERI) as a manager of our employment program but also provide direct services both for employment as well as benefits counseling services. I agree the speaker had great information on biases and being aware of the barriers individuals encounter beyond their control. I was really glad to hear the conversation about making safe integrated spaces for individuals.
